If you've never had a surface sandblasted before, the process can seem mysterious. How does it work? What equipment shows up? What does the property look like during and after? This article covers everything you need to know about mobile sandblasting — so you know exactly what to expect when Black Ox shows up at your door.
WHAT IS SANDBLASTING?
Sandblasting — more accurately called abrasive blasting — is the process of propelling a stream of abrasive material at high velocity against a surface using compressed air. The abrasive particles physically strip away rust, paint, coatings, stains, and deterioration, leaving behind a clean, profiled surface ready for treatment or coating.
Despite the name, modern abrasive blasting rarely uses actual sand. Sand contains silica, which is a respiratory hazard. Professional operators use a range of safer, more effective media depending on the surface and job requirements.
THE EQUIPMENT WE BRING TO YOUR PROPERTY
When Black Ox arrives at your location, our fully equipped mobile unit carries everything needed to complete the job on-site:
- Blast pot — a pressurized vessel holding the abrasive media, connected to the air compressor
- Air compressor — industrial-grade unit providing the high-pressure air stream (typically 100–175 PSI depending on the job)
- Blast hose and nozzle — the delivery system, with nozzle size and shape varied for different applications
- PPE equipment — blast hood, respirator, gloves, and protective gear for the operator
- Containment supplies — tarps, plastic sheeting, and barriers to protect surrounding areas
- Vacuum/cleanup equipment — for collecting and disposing of spent media and debris
TYPES OF BLAST MEDIA WE USE
Choosing the right media for the surface is critical. Using too aggressive a media on a soft surface causes damage; using too soft a media on heavy rust wastes time and money. Here's what we use and when:
COAL SLAG / MINERAL ABRASIVE
Aggressive, fast-cutting media for heavy rust removal, steel structures, and industrial equipment. Leaves an excellent surface profile for coatings.
GLASS BEAD
Gentle, precision media for automotive parts, aluminum, and surfaces requiring a smooth, polished finish without dimensional change.
ALUMINUM OXIDE
Hard, angular media for concrete profiling, epoxy prep, and surfaces requiring a specific surface profile for coating adhesion.
BAKING SODA / SODIUM BICARBONATE
Ultra-gentle media for delicate surfaces, historic brick, and applications where no surface profiling is desired. Water-soluble and environmentally friendly.
WHAT THE PROCESS LOOKS LIKE ON YOUR PROPERTY
- Arrival and assessment — we review the surface, confirm the scope, and select the appropriate media and pressure settings
- Containment setup — we protect adjacent surfaces, landscaping, vehicles, and your pool if applicable with tarps and sheeting
- Blasting — we work systematically across the surface, maintaining consistent distance and angle for even coverage
- Inspection — we check for complete removal and spot-blast any remaining areas
- Cleanup — spent media and debris are collected and removed from your property
- Final walkthrough — we review the completed surface with you before we leave
