THE BASICS: WHAT IS SANDBLASTING?

Sandblasting — also called abrasive blasting — is a surface preparation and cleaning process that uses compressed air to propel abrasive media (like sand, grit, or glass beads) at high velocity against a surface. The abrasive particles strip away paint, rust, scale, dirt, old coatings, and contaminants, leaving a clean, properly prepared surface beneath.

Think of it like a very powerful, precisely controlled eraser. Instead of chemicals or manual scrubbing, sandblasting uses physical abrasion to achieve results that nothing else can match — especially on large or complex surfaces.

WHAT MEDIA IS USED?

Despite the name, modern sandblasting doesn't always use sand. Different abrasive media are chosen based on the project:

  • Black beauty (coal slag) — Common for heavy industrial and structural work
  • Glass beads — Gentler, used for delicate surfaces like classic cars or antiques
  • Aluminum oxide — Very aggressive, excellent for heavy rust removal
  • Crushed glass — Eco-friendly option, good all-purpose media
  • Walnut shell / corn cob — Extremely gentle, used for wood or very thin metals

The right media choice depends on the material being blasted, the desired surface profile, and the end use of the surface. A professional sandblaster chooses media carefully to get the right result without damaging the substrate.

WHEN DO YOU NEED SANDBLASTING?

Sandblasting is the right choice when:

  • You need to remove old paint, coatings, or primers from a surface
  • There's significant rust or corrosion that needs complete removal
  • You're preparing a surface for a new coating, epoxy, or sealer
  • Pressure washing isn't strong enough to remove the contamination
  • You need a specific surface profile for a coating to adhere properly
  • You're restoring a surface to like-new condition
  • Graffiti or stubborn stains need to be removed from masonry

SANDBLASTING IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

Florida's climate creates unique surface challenges. The combination of intense UV radiation, high humidity, salt air (near the coast), and frequent rain accelerates the breakdown of coatings, promotes mold growth, and speeds up corrosion. This means Florida homeowners and businesses often need surface restoration more frequently than in drier climates.

Pool decks, driveways, brick structures, and steel equipment in Central Florida all benefit enormously from professional sandblasting every few years — especially before re-sealing or repainting.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER BLASTING?

Once the surface is blasted clean, it's ready for the next step — whether that's painting, coating, sealing, or simply leaving the clean surface as-is. Blasted surfaces should be treated as soon as possible since bare metal will begin to rust quickly and bare concrete will absorb contaminants.
